You are so right. Writing IS thinking. Took me absolutely ages to realise this. It became ridiculously obvious to me this year. I write a little each day and then have intentional silence. And because of that it's really easy for me to see the writing happening in my head.
Substack notes are the opposite. Just awful. Infinite scroll is always awful. I am still there, but I loathe it. I am going to stick with it because I feel I have a message that I want to get out there. But it very reliably puts me in a bad mood. This, in a way, is a useful teacher.
Between the two, it makes half of Substack very worthwhile indeed and half of it not only worthwhile but properly damaging. I wouldn't write without Substack. But looking at notes is very bad for me. I am still figuring out what to make of this.
I just read your latest post and it's my favorite of yours yet. Brilliant part about the old man playing the game managing a tiny town on his phone. As far as what to make of the Notes conundrum: if you can take Notes in small doses, I do think it's a great way to find new writers. I am just an all or nothing type of person (I will waste literally my entire evening on Notes if I don't go cold turkey).
Thank you! That's really kind of you to say. Really glad you enjoyed it.
Re notes... I'm pretty sure we are all All Or Nothing types. I don't believe in willpower. Notes will always be bad. I think when I've written down everything I want to write down on Substack, maybe a couple of years, I'll delete the lot. Perhaps one day there will be something without a side order of infinite scroll! Maybe at that point I'll have to pick up writing that novel again.
I see you. Sending healing energy to you and your babe. Beautiful piece. You're a writer, so even resting is writing. When you get back to sitting in the chair, I'll bet you realize you were "writing" all this time. (P.S. The Summer I Turned Pretty was a recovery show for me, too!!)
"Even resting is writing" I LOVE this sentiment. Thank you so much for the kind note. (Also: TSITP is such a fever dream. What even IS this show?! Lol). P.S. Love your new haircut. :)
Thank you!! I have to admit I I’m quite fond of “teenage” shows… I think I keep hoping for another O.C. ;) yeah some of the acting in TSITP is atrocious and I struggled with a few of the characters… and yet I just kept watching!!! I’ll never get that time back! :-) I hope you are feeling better.
I am also reading Theo of Golden! So far I love it.
I bet your first draft of your novel is so much better than you think. ❤️
My parents told me I HAD to read it (they both loved it) and I am enjoying it so much! Thank you so much for reading. <3

Thank you for writing this! I feel tired too. Theo of Golden is a beautiful book!
You are doing All The Things All By Yourself too, my friend. Hang in there. <3

You are a real trooper, hang in there and keep up the good spirit. And Annika, I hope to be able to read your first novel.
